Samsung’s exclusive Wide Color Enhancer technology delivers more brilliant colors, even in bright areas of the picture where blues and greens are washed out on conventional screens. Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart
With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience. If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

OH MY GOD AMAZING TELEVISION5
This television is truly something to be admired. I'd say it's also a work of art.

I have a high definition cable box with an HDMI cable to the TV and the HD channels are superb. I mean, the picture is totally 100% crystal clear. I have windows behind me and somehow there is virtually no glare. Yes, the TV looks better when it is dark outside versus light outside but it's perfectly great when it is light outside.

I'm writing this review on my couch. My laptop is connected to the TV via a VGA cable with a wireless keyboard and mouse. Unfortunately my laptop does not have HDMI but I can see very well with the VGA cable. Needless to say, I am going to become much more lazy as a result of this TV.

The 40 inches is great for my viewing pleasure. I'm sure 46 is bigger but I am 100% content with 40 inches. It comes down to price. I did not want to pay more than $1,200 for a TV (that's $100 a month for 12 months using the Amazon Store Card). So this was a no-brainer for me.

If you are in the market for a TV, I highly suggest this one. It is truly a wonderful TV.

The "only" thing that isn't 100% perfect is the sound. The sound is good mind you, but it is not as perfect as the picture. But for the record, I have not played with the equalizer which people report helps the sound.

This is an amazing TV.

UPDATE 6/12/2008: This is still a remarkable television. I don't have any complaints about it at all. Even the sound is perfectly fine. However, you MUST either have a Blu Ray player or an Upconvert player with an HDMI cable to get the full benefit. Everything looks and sounds perfect on this TV.

UPDATE 7/13/2008: The TV is still perfect so just buy it already! I actually bought a 26" 3-series for my bedroom. I don't notice too much of a difference; I am happy with this "worse" TV as I am with my living room TV (this one). Samsung makes an excellent LCD television!

FINAL UPDATE 3/19/2009: Well I've had this TV about a year and I can honestly say it still is great. The sound is great, too. But... in retrospect, when it comes to TVs, bigger is better. A year ago this TV was $1,200 and I just paid it off this month. But if I could have gotten a 42" or a 46", then that would be better. Don't get me wrong, the 40" is great, but what's wrong with a few extra inches? Either way you can't go wrong with the LCD 5 Series from Samsung.

Beautiful Picture - Great Service5
One of my biggest purchases with Amazon and it went as smooth as possible. The picture on this TV is amazing. FiOS HD can be almost too much pretty on one screen with this TV, it's a bit overwhelming at first. Standard def channels are of course a less clear but better than expected. The only issue I have with this TV is the length of time to power on and off. You also have to point the remote just right sometimes or the function won't register. Small issue though, hardly worth docking points off this unit.

The menu is wonderful and gives complete control over settings. Each input saves your settings too! The AVS Forums have a great thread concerning settings for each input that should be checked out and tested. A little tweaking got the black levels and skin tone just right.

I haven't tested the VGA input, but my Macbook Pro connected with a DVI-HDMI cable is amazing! My FiOS is connected via HDMI and as I mentioned, quite beautiful. I also have a Wii hooked up via component. The Wii maxes out at 480p but really shines on this TV despite the 1080p native res. Don't be fooled though, the picture is a little fuzzy but through some tweaking you can get a great picture without springing for a separate upconverter.

Shipping was of course through Eagle/CEVA. Make sure to call and verify they've got your info. They didn't have my phone number on record at first so I corrected that. My delivery man was Rick. He was great! He called to setup the appointment, was on time, very delicate with the unit, and very personable. I couldn't be more pleased.

UPDATE: Just wanted to mention the finish of the screen. Originally, I was debating between this model and the older lnt4069fx due to the matte screen. I chose this model for several reasons. First, it was cheaper. Second, I decided 120Hz wasn't worth the extra 400 bucks. Third, the screen isn't glossy but it isn't matte it's more of an in-between, satin-like finish that works great in my TV watching room that has a glass front door to the outside and 2 windows. Glare isn't a problem at all for me even with lamps behind me. It really is great. The ultra gloss on the 600 and 700 models are way to much for my multipurpose room. Hope that helps anyone on the fence that cares about gloss vs. matte finishes.

Caution: Known HDMI issue2
I purchased the Samsung LN40A550 40" 1080p LCD HDTV on July 14, 2008. It's my 4th big screen HDTV purchase but my first 1080p box. Agree with other reviews in that it has an absolute beautiful picture at a very good price. There are many features I love about this TV, but here's the problem....

I purchased a Samsung 1080P8 upconverting DVD player with an HDMI (version 1.3) cable. When i watch a DVD, i get a 'searching for signal' message that appears on the screen for about 5 seconds. This happens once every minute or two! I went into full troubleshooting mode by replacing the cable, the DVD player, and everything else i could think of. I tried the DVD player and HDMI cable with my other HDTV sets and it worked great. After calling Samsung technical support and getting to their level 2 support in New Jersey, they acknowledged there is a problem with the HDMI connection with the TV but they do not have a firmware fix for it yet. They suggested i wait for the firmware fix (release date unknown), or return the TV and try another one. I opted to exchange the TV for the same model. I received it today and (unfortunately) it has the same problem. I will now return the TV to Amazon, get a refund, and purchase a different model.

Bottom line, if you don't use or need the HDMI connection, you should be fine with this set. However, if you plan to use HDMI I'd look to a different model until this is fixed.

Update on July 28 - After further troubleshooting, the HDMI problem is with the combination of using a Samsung LN40A550 40" 1080p LCD HDTV with the Samsung 1080P8 upconverting DVD player. Together, they do not work. Separately, the upconverting DVD player works perfectly with other TVs, and the Samsung LN40A550 works fine with another upconverting DVD. I purchased the same brand so i would eliminate this exact problem! Who would think that Samsung has not tested their own product compatibility before they go out the door? Exremely poor quality control - my guess is they have a problem with their 'anynet' software feature, but it still blanks-out with 'anynet' turned off. Purchase the Sony upconverting DVD player with this TV and you'll be OK. However, now I personally don't trust Samsung.

Samsung's Wide Color Enhancer 2 technology delivers more brilliant colors by expanding the gamut of color expression into a third axis, creating a 3D diagram of luminance. This creates a dynamic display of on-screen color and allows traditionally weak colors, such as green and blue, to look vivid and deep. In addition, red colors are enhanced to provide strong colors across the spectrum and the perfect balance of RGB.

An excellent set!5
I was undecided between this 2009 model and last year's LN40A550.
The features are substantially identical, but after figuring that the difference between best prices for the two, which I could find after extensive shopping around, was only $50, I went for newer one for its updated look and lighter weight.
In the reviews, one of the principal complaints for 2008 was the sound quality. I can't directly compare 2009 and 2008, but found 2009's LN40B550 to have perfectly adequate, if not excellent speakers, as far as TVs go.
Picture quality, menus, setup are excellent as expected.
One aspect that I did find puzzling is Wiselink not being able to recognize my old trustworthy USB Flash Drive. I even tried formatting the drive in various ways, unfortunately none of the tricks worked.
Perhaps, it's the ancient drive not being comparable in some way, but it had never let me down before. Anyhow, I ordered a few different flash drives, and will try again, and then post an update.
====================================

Tried four various flash drives, all of them work just fine in computers, all four freshly formatted same way (FAT32). Two of the drives are read by the TV with no problems, the two others are not recognized at all... Go figure... The slideshow functionality is nice, quite limited, but does the job.

Just for the reference, one of the drives that does work in this TV is Kingston Data Traveler 4GB.

Very, Very Pleased!4
Only the second night with this set and I can't unglue myself from it. This is a great sub-$1,000 set that will please all but the most hardcore videophiles. This set is also very light, I tucked it under my arm to move it up and down the stairs. ToC is subtle, almost invisible, so those who don't care for last year's ToC, don't worry, you can barely see it the color on this TV. The swivel stand makes it easy so access the rear of the TV to hook up the cables that it makes you wonder why other manufacturers make stands without the swivel feature.

I had originally purchased an LG, but the off-angle viewing was awful, but from the same seating position, the Sammy shines. As with all LCDs, some color is lost when viewing from off-angle, but this set always displayed a picture that was acceptable.

If there's a weakness, it's displaying standard definition, as in regular cable, but that's a challenge shared by most LCD screens. SD does not look as good as I've seen on some other LCDs, but the picture is more than acceptable.

DVD's showed great... Upconverted DVD even better, I was impressed... Blu ray blew my mind. The color depth, the dark blacks, the crisp picture... I was VERY pleased. I am sure you will be too!

Update 07/13/09... Almost 3 months and I'm still happy. Had it hooked up to a Samsung BDP2550 bluray player and it's awesome. Currently using the upconverting Samsung 1080P9 DVD player and it's still awesome. I have to sit closer than 7 feet to see any difference between DVD and bluray. Also connected to my PC via an 18ft HDMI cable, streaming Netflix and using Windows Media Center to view the NCIS and Star Trek episodes I have on my hard drive.
Still a GREAT purchase and I recommend this set to anyone interested in a 1080p LCD.

Disappointing at best3
Well, had the LN40B550 foracouple of days, and must say was very diappointed with the picture quality. I did some more research outside of Amazon, and found this thread on AVSForum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1126988&page=6), where many other users are experiencing the same picture quality issues, mostly blurring and ghosting (using digital cox cable with component connection). HD content looks good, but still grainy for some reason. Also, many other users has had requested technicians to come out and see if they can make any repairs, with most of them replacing the screen itself. But does not quite the fix the problem. My Vizio 32" LCD seems more crisper than this TV. I even upgraded the firmware, and adjusted the pitcure settings, but I'm just not satisfied with this TV. I will be returning it, and shop for another TV. Hope this helps.

Wide Color Enhancer 2/Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp

Wide Color Enhancer 2 The NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) has established the color standards all TVs in America try to meet. And typical LCD TVs only meet about 72 percent of this standard. Samsung LCD HDTVs use Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp backlights to give you 92 percent coverage of the NTSC standard, ensuring truer, more breathlessly vivid colors.

Samsung's Wide Color Enhancer 3 technology delivers more brilliant colors by expanding the gamut of color expression into a third axis, creating a 3D diagram of luminance. This creates a dynamic display of on-screen color and allows traditionally weak colors, such as green and blue, to look vivid and deep. In addition, red colors are enhanced to provide strong colors across the spectrum and the perfect balance of RGB.

ic Contrast Ratio

100,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio 100,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio will give you a picture better than you ever thought possible, with whiter whites, blacker blacks and a nearly infinite subtlety of gradations in between. As two of the most important determining factors in overall picture quality, contrast and brightness levels achieve new heights in this latest generation LCD panel. Samsung's new LCD TVs give the most stunning realistic picture quality ever.

Touch of Color In 2008, Samsung created its unique Touch of Color (ToC) design, which uses dual-injection molding to coat a translucent, colored surface to achieve an attractive crystalline appearance. The latest evolution of Samsung's ToC design begins with a deep piano black bezel that fades into distinct chrome that finishes as light ruby highlights. The intensity of the color subtly changes depending upon the viewing angle, and further accentuates the TV's slim bezel.

Touch of Color Up-to-the-minute access to weather, news, sports and stock information is just a cable and a click away through the HDTV's Ethernet port and new InfoLink RSS service. An all-new user interface with digital contents management guide provides intuitive navigation and access to both internal and external content.

Better than 32" XBR95
I got this TV a few days ago and i can honestly say that the picture looks like a million bucks. My brother has the Sony 32" XBR9 TV and this Samsung TV completely blows it away. For a better picture the TV has to be calibrated (by a pro or yourself using online manuals) and your blu-ray system as well.

I have this TV hooked up to my PS3 and my 360 and the picture looks amazing. The ability to have this TV connect to the net is a huge plus. You can check the Weather, News, and Stock Market info all with the push of a button.

Movies look great running at 1080p/24! If you want a TV with a superior picture then this is the TV for you!

An Awesome Picture5
I have had the Samsung LCD LN32B650 a few days. I will write more after I have it six months but I have checked everything out and have found absolutely nothing to complain about in regards to the TV. You will note this 2009 model has some significant upgrades from the 2008 model. The picture is awesome!

One thing I did not like was paying over $1100 for a 32 inch LCD but if you check the specifications are top notch so it probably is worth it. Watching the action in the NCAA games the motion shots are perfect. Not related directly to the TV but the manual is an E-Manual and it comes on a USB drive you plug into the TV. I can not load it on my computer very successfully as the software is looking for commands from the TV remote and not the computer so I can not naviagate through the e-manual very well so I can't print it out. It is personal preference but I don't care that much for e-manuals when I can't print them out. I like to be able to read a manual and make notes while I am trying things. I understand why companies do it but I don't have to like it. The other issue with an E-Manual is you can only see it on the TV and if you are having issues with the TV you may well not be able to look at the manual for help. This is a Samsung issue and has nothing to do with the TV. They do have telephone and e-mail help which I never needed but one does have that option. The Samsung web site has a lot of good FAQ's. One tricky thing for the wife and I on installation was a cover that came with it that took us a long time to figure out where it goes. The fact is if you use the table stand which we did you don't use it. It is to cover that hole if you do a wall mount.

There are all kinds of video and audio setting which I have not used as I just could not ask for a nicer picture. We got the TV going with the Quick guide which is not bad. We had some questions about some setting that were answered in the E-manual. I really made no changes to them after reading the manual. We do not have a Blue Ray but it appears there are some setting that would enhance watching a DVD played on a Blue Ray. The remote is very intuitive for the wife and I. The huge number of I/O's on the TV is awesome. We used one of the HDMI inputs with a 1.3 cable which should give the best quality. We are using a dishnetwork VIP 622 which also lets us use the OTA antenna hooked to the VIP 622 and puts those channels in the program guide. The OTA as well as Satellite HD looks great. Also the SD looks excellent. I have heard a lot about how bad SD looks but so far we have been most please with the SD channels. Some of this may have to do with the 32' size and might not look as great on a 52" model.

IMO, Worth The Price5
Put simply, you can't get more advanced than the Samsung LN32B650. It's 1080p at 120Hz with a gorgeous display. I probably couldn't go back to 60Hz after playing my PS3 on this TV. I dare you to watch a Blu-Ray on this TV in a properly lit room and not be stunned. The only minor thing I don't like are the buttons on the TV (power, volume and channel) are almost invisible. They're heat-sensitive buttons on the bottom right of the TV you slide your finger across, but you need to be in a extremely bright room to see what you're actually pressing. The labeling of those buttons should glow in the dark. Nevertheless, despite needing a lot of them, it's worth every penny.

Great Picture!5
I've been wanting a new flat-panel TV for some time and, though I do make a lot of purchases on-line, I felt like I actually needed to look at a TV in person. My wife and I were looking at the TV's in Wal-mart when another customer pointed out that the better TVs had a higher contrast ratio and he thought that was the most important factor. Sure enough, the one we thought had the best picture was the one with the highest contrast ratio - it was 3200:1, the best 32-inch in the store. (I really wanted something with 1080p resolution, but they only had 720p in the 32" size TVs. We decided to get that one, since we had seen it and felt like we could enjoy it - but they didn't have one in stock...

I came home and began to research. It turns out that there are only a very few 1080p TVs in the 32" model, this being one of them. In looking at the contrast ratio I found that this one was rated at 15,000:1 - almost 5 times better than the best one at Walmart. (High contrast ratio seems to give you darker darks and whiter whites - lower contrast ratios have a milky looking gray where it's supposed to be black...) My research combined with what I saw in the store gave me the confidence to purchase a TV on-line. I settled on the Samsung LN32A550.

The TV arrived in good working order and I had it set up and running within 30 minutes. (The biggest problem was unhooking and moving the old one!) The picture is everything I could have imagined it would be - far better than anything I saw in the store. The crystal clear picture and crisp, well defined images make this simply the best picture I have ever seen on a TV. I saw a bit of a NASCAR race on this unit and the motion was unbelievably smooth - no after images at all.

I debated a bit on giving this unit a five-star rating. I felt like the picture quality so outrated the sound that I had to bump it up a bit. But if sound is an issue you may want to consider this to be a "four-star" unit. While the TV has a built in equalizer function (with some presets based on your listening preferences) I found the sound, even in the best adjustment leaves a lot to be desired. It has a tinny sound much like you would expect from an old transitor radio. I would suggest investing in a good pair of external speakers to enhance this unit. (If you already have a home theatre set-up sound is not an issue anyway...)

So far I'm glad I made this purchase. If Samsung can improve the speakers on this TV they will have the perfect TV!

*****
UPDATE:

OK.... Now that I've owned this thing a few months I'll tell you how it's going:

First, it was pointed out to me in a post that the contrast ratio on 27- and 32-inch TV's was 15,000:1 instead of 30,000:1 as I incorrectly surmissed from the somewhat unclear (to me) product update. I have edited the initial review to reflect the correct information. I'm sorry for any confusion it may have caused. (If you want the higher ratio and have the room, you could consider going with a larger screen size. 15,000: is still a pretty amazing ratio though...)

Overall I am happy to report that I am just as satisfied today as I was the day I first turned it on. I did purchase a set of Creative GigaWorks T40 Premium 2.0 Speakers (available at Amazon.com) for around $125 - and this dramatically improved my viewing experience. (I'm sure the best option would be to use a home theatre set-up - but this unit is in my bedroom...)

I still recommend this TV - just don't expect too much out of the sound - without a little help.

Good TV at a Great Price4
I bought this last week, and so far, its exceeded all my expectations except in one regard (below). The picture is fantastic, and each input is customizable so you can use one video setting for each device you have plugged in. This is especially handy as it doubles as a PC monitor for me. Some people say you can't tell 1080p quality on a 32" screen. Well I'm here to tell you their wrong. The difference is noticeable, both when using it for my PC and when lying back in bed watching movies. The interface is user-friendly, the remote well laid out, and setup was easy. This brings me to the one flaw in the system: the on-board speakers are tin-y and low-quality. Get a set of external speakers ASAP if you by this set. If you've got a home theatre system already, then this isn't an issue, but be warned, this is one of the worst sounding TV I've ever had. Still, for a picture this good, its worth it.

Deffinetly worth the money4
This was my first television purchase. I wanted a true 1080p high definition television. I didn't want to spend over $1000 and I did some serious shopping between Circuit City, Best Buy, and Target.

I found that the in store guy I bought my television from at Circuit City matched the online price they had listed. At first, one guy tried to sell me it for 1099, but that is not the point of the review, but be careful...do you're home work before purchasing. You could be missing an online sale like I almost did. Also, AAA gives a discount for 8% on purchases over 150 at Circuit City.

The picture clarity in HD is simply amazing. I was watching the Masters on Sunday and the detail was just incredible. It made me very happy with my purchase. The picture clarity with standard non-HD programming is not as good as my old 20" TV. I'm not sure why this is, I assumed it would also be a better picture...I was wrong.

Gaming on this TV is incredible as well. The Playstation 3 HD games are so bright and vivid, it really does make it more fun to play with the picture clarity being so clear. The system hooks into the TV via HDMI cable and was so easy to set up. This TV has three HDMI inputs, two on the back one on the side. I can hook it up to my PC too, though that is not an important feature to me.

The design is nice and simple. All black with an easy to install TV stand. The remote is big but not to big, with buttons spaced out nicely and the back light turning on each time a button is pushed. Installing this TV was very simple, that was great!

The only negative about this TV is the sound quality from the built in speakers during DVD viewing. They speakers become tin(e) and sound quality is distorted. I recommend investing in a nice home theater system. Sound quality is good while watching TV and gaming.

Overall I would give this TV a 4.5 out of 5. I am very happy with it and its abundance of HDMI inputs. The picture quality is amazing for HD programs and gaming. The contrast isn't the greatest for regular tv viewing and the sound is tin(e)/distorted while watching DVDs.
